We are in Matera

We are in Matera, in a very charming landscape surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation. This brand-new building is located a few kilometres far from the Santuario (Sanctuary) of Madonna di Picciano. The strategic position of our hotel allows getting to the Sassi and to the city centre in a few minutes and by any means. All the bedrooms are set over three floors and are very unique for their space and design. Hotel Dimora del Monaco offers 23 exceptional bedrooms: 7 Standards, 10 Superiors, 2 of which for disabled people, 1 Deluxe, 2 with a French bed and 3 Suites, with a total of 50 sleeping accommodations. Every bedroom has its own private bathroom supplied with bath linen, courtesy set, and hairdryer. All our bedrooms are furnished with mini bar, TV Ultra HD 43’’ with a wide range of digital terrestrial and digital satellite TV broadcasting, high-efficient air conditioning system with air exchange and heat recovery, safety deposit box, a direct dial telephone and a coffee station.

From Bari Central Station to Ferrovie Appulo Lucane Station. Take the train to Matera and stop in Villa Longo Station. Transfer service upon request.
From Potenza Central Station to Ferrandina Scalo-Matera Station. Once in Ferrandina Scalo-Matera Station, take the bus service to Matera and stop in Villa Longo Station. Transfer Service upon request.

By car

Arriving from the South: take the SS106 Reggio Calabria-Taranto, exit at Matera. Go on, take the Exit “Matera North Tensostruttura – Via Gravina” (Exit 5) and continue for about 1 km. Arriving from the North: take the motorway A14, Exit “Bari North-Matera”, exit at Matera North Tensostruttura – Via Gravina (Exit 5) and continue for about 1 km.
Arriving from the North: take the motorway A3, exit at Potenza. Take the SS407 (Basentana) Potenza-Matera, exit at Matera North Tensostruttura-Via Gravina (Exit 5) and continue for about 1 km.

What to visit in Matera

Rock-hewn churches (Chiese rupestri), Sasso Barisano and Caveoso (the Sassi), San Pietro Barisano and Sant’Agostino churches. The Archeological Museum “Domenico Ridola”, the Basilicata National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art (Palazzo Lanfranchi), the Museum of Peasant Culture and the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture (MUSMA). The Palombaro Lungo, an enormous, impressive cistern, which is the biggest in Europe and one of the reasons why Matera was granted the UNESCO World Heritage Site Status and many other interesting sites.

Excursions and places near Matera

Montescaglioso (20 km far from Matera): Abbazia Benedettina (Benedectine Abbey), Historical city centre, Museum of Peasant Culture.
Miglionico (13 km far from Matera): Castello del Malconsiglio (Castle). The castle has a strategic position and was built in the VIII-XI centuries on the hill of the town. It is very famous for having hosted the Plot of the Barons in 1485.
Craco Vecchia (old town of Craco, 55 km far from Matera): the ghost town of Basilicata. The sight of this town is still incredible.
Metaponto (60 km far from Matera): The Agora, the theatre, the Hera and Lycian Apollo’s temples, the 15 untouched doric columns of Tavole Palatine (Palatine Tables) and the Antiquarium, a museum that contains all the archeological discoveries of the town and of its territory, especially the system of agricultural divisions with the new crops introduced by the Greeks.
Alberobello (66 km far from Matera): The Alberobello Trulli (typical buildings).
Castellana Grotte (60 km far from Matera): the famous Grotte of Castellana (Castellana Caves), very particular underground caves.
Castelmezzano/Pietrapertosa (78 km from Matera): Cosy little towns set at the foot of the Lucanian Dolomites, an enchanting scenario where you can enjoy the breathtaking and famous “Angel’s flight”.
Sasso di Castalda (130 km far from Matera): Visit the historical city centre and from there you can easily get to the first 70-metres-suspended bridge, which is 95 m long. Walking through the footpath along the banks of the creek Fosso Arenazzo and passing by the votive chapel, in 15 minutes you get to the starting point of the impressive “Ponte alla Luna” (Moonlight Bridge), a 120-metres-suspended bridge, with an only span of 300 m.
